Yams everywhere Or.
All I want for my birthday is a big booty ho Yes those are actual lyrics from his song quot;birthday songquot; But really once you perfect your 2 chainz you can do it with anything I like this lamp yo that's why i purchased this lamp I'm in the kitchen. Okay, so the next step, which is really kindof, if you can get your head around this next step, then you'll really be on your way tolearning how to fingerpick in this style. Because, okay, so the first thing you practiceis learning how to isolate your thumb from what your other fingers on your right handare doing. Now, that might not seem too difficult if we're doing a simple pattern like we'vebeen showing so far. Or you're just sort of doing it on the one, two, one, two or, youknow, one, two, three, four on the beats. Like. So here, the thumb is isolated fromthe other fingers and if you can get this, that's half the battle. But the next stepis learning how to syncopate those notes and
that is to say, even though your thumb isgoing to continue doing that one, two, one , two pattern, you know need to be able toplay notes in between those beats. Syncopated notes. And that's what that means, it's notesthat are being played on the offbeat or in between. So, here's an example of what syncopationsounds like. So, if we just take that basic pattern, again, I'm just fingering a C chordhere on the left hand. And we go, right, that's the one, two, okay, so that's not syncopated. Here's a syncopated note. Righté Same notes, I've just changed where they're happening.Actually, there's two syncopated notes there. This one and that one. Righté They're offbeatfrom that one, two, one, two. They're happening
in between. Righté So, here's the thumb, one, two, one, two, righté Now, the other ones are going, they're in between. If we do themon the beat, it sounds like this. So you could do it on the beat, it sounds like this, itgoes. Okayé Here's on the beat. Here's syncopated. On the beat. Syncopated.

So, you can also walk down several notes withina progression. So, for example, if you're on an E, let me start that one over. Cut,I'm going to start over, okayé Readyé Okay. So, there's another kind of walkdown you can do, which is just adding even more notes to kind of give it, kind of a realsort of a honkytonk sound, I guess, if you want to call it that. There's a kind of afamous progression in blues and bluegrass music that I call the quot;salty dogquot; progression. It's basically, E to A to D and then to G. But then, after the G, you have a full walkdown like, back to the E. Righté And here, I'm actually playing an E7. So, if I was tostrum it, it would be E or E7, as I've got
here. E, A, D and then G and then walk theG down like that before you, you know, go into the next measure. So the way that thequot;salty dogquot; blues sounds, the way Mississippi John Hurt played it and it sounds really goodon, in this style, is kind of. Now, when I do this walk down, I'm actuallypopping each of those notes with my thumb. Righté So for a second, I kind of depart fromthat little rigid one, two, one, two that our thumb is doing just to kind of hit thosenotes with a walk down, you know. So.
