791113 Chord

Hello, I'm Steven Law. Last time we learnt how to build a chord with 3 notes. This time let's learn about 4note chords. A chord made up of 4 notes is called a Seventh Chord Adding another third on top, it has the root, 3rd, 5th, and 7th scale degrees. First, we need to learn two more intervals From C to B (1 to 7) the interval is called a “major 7th From C to B♭ (1 to ♭7)

is a semitone less than that so the interval from C to B♭ is called a “minor 7th If we add a B above the C major chord, which is C major plus a major 7th, this chord is called a “C major 7 chord If we add a B above the C minor chord, which is C minor plus a major 7th, this chord is called a “C minor major 7 chord.

I'll explain two more very common seventh chords If we add a B♭ above the C major chord, which is C major plus a minor 7th, this chord is called a “C dominant 7th chord (or C7 chord for short). If we add a B♭ above the C minor chord, which is C minor plus a minor 7th, this chord is called a “C minor 7 chord. Let's talk about 9th,11th, and 13th chords.

If you want to build these chords, you simply add the 9th,11th or 13th scale degrees above the seventh chords. Whatever seventh chord you use, the 9th, 11th or 13th are the same notes. Let's look at the following example, These three 9th chords all add the note D on top. These three 11th chords all add the notes D and F on top. There three 13th chords all add the notes D,F and A on top. That's all for today. See you next time.
