Hi. I'm Aaron from HowtoSing and I wantto talk for a minute about singing lessons. Singing lessons, kind of a broad topic butI actually want to cover three main questions when it comes to singing lessons. First one is, Do you have what it takesé Thesecond one is, Do you really need singing lessons to improveé The third one is, What'syour next stepé Then I want to give you an idea of kind of where to go to find good singinglesson programs and all that. Do you have what it takesé What I find withthe people I encounter, people I've encountered with lessons and the singing and want to singand all that, that you're your own worst critic.

So if you think that you can't sing or youjust feel like you weren't born with a ton of talent, I want to say that with the righttips and just getting started learning, a lot of people kind of just come out of theirshell and they really bud and become good singers. So don't let the demons, your own demons thatyou battle with, your insecurity let you think that you will not be able to sing, that youdon't have what it takes. The fact is, with the right instruction, anybody can learn tosing. That's a question that comes up all the time. Can I learn to singé Yes, you canlearn how to sing. I will get more into that

in this next question and the next questionwe will tackle is, Do you need singing lessons to improveé I think one of the problems is that we seeour favorite singers. They step on stage or we listen to their CDs or whatever and wedon't ever actually see them doing the vocal exercises, doing the vocal training, doingall the learning. So we just kind of assume that they didn't have to. They just woke upor they were born and then they just stepped on stage and they have these beautiful voices. They could just do that but that's just it's just not the way it is.

Your favorite singer, I guarantee whoeverit is, had vocal training. They did vocal exercises. That day you saw them, they probablydid a 30 or 45minute regimen of vocal exercises and do it daily. The fact is, vocal exercisesare really important. I know this is more about singing lessons but with singing lessons, what happens is you get all the things you need. Basically to learn how to sing is twobasic categories. There's a bunch of learning stuff about the voice, how it works, a lotof just tips and tricks that just help you, like having your tongue where is your tonguesupposed to be when you singé I don't know. Well your tongue is supposed to be restedup against those teeth for all the vowels

that you sing. So it's kind of where like, Hey, when yousay, Hey, where your tongue goes there. That's where it's supposed to be for all the vowelsounds and a lot of the consonant sounds and when you do a consonant sound, you want togo right back down there. So it's just little things like that that will affect your singingin a big way but you won't learn unless you take some type of singing lessons. So there'stons of stuff like that and the second part is what I was saying, the exercise part. Anybody can learn to sing because of vocaltechnique anybody can learn and singing exercises

everybody can do. You got to know the rightsinging exercises and all that. You got to learn how to preserve your voice. There'sjust a bunch of stuff that you can learn with singing lessons. So I think it's really important.I think that if you're really serious about wanting to sing which is the next one, whatis your next stepé The next step is kind of a personal inventory. Are you ready to dowhat it takes to become a singeré It does take time and effort. The voice is somethingthat people want to expand their range and sing high notes and do all this stuff andthat's fantastic. It's absolutely possible but it does take time. It does take effort.

Singing Lessons for Beginners. So you want to learn how to sing, or you want to start to learn how to sing. Well, I want to help you on your journey to understand some of the most basic, fundamental, andrudimentary things that takes a basic, or nonsinger into a decent singer, or even a great singer. And these are nonnegotiables, these are things that we all have to do, no matter what levelof singing we are, these are things that really help us on our journey for singing. So the very, very first thing is: Pitch. Now I want to talk about breath support and vowelplacement, and we'll get into some of that, but pitch. can you carry any kind of a tuneéYou know, can you sing quot;Happy Birthdayquot; or

can you sing a simple nursery rhymeé That'skey, and then, basically holding that pitch will help us determine how well you're goingto be able to translate this and grow quickly on your journey for singing. So I'm goingto take us through some simple scales and I'm going to do a male version and a femaleversion, so hang in there, I'll do the girls second, but the basic things are this: Thefirst thing is posture. We want to sit up straight. We don't want to get our spine tippedin any direction. We don't want to look up at the ceiling when we're going for high notes,or look down. We want to have a good command of our breath. Alright, so I'm going to havesome scales and I'm going to have you match

the tone of the scale with a very, very simplearpeggio, which is just a threenote chord, and I'm going to go through these notes verysimply and show you how you can start your journey for singing. So we want to open upour mouth, quot;AH, AHquot; we're going to do the AH vowel, and there's several vowels thatyou have to work to build muscle memory so that this becomes second nature, but for starters,we're just going to build some simple muscle memory. We're going to take a breath from our belly, from our abdomen, not from our chest like this. We want to take a breath from our belly,as best as we can, and then I have a whole section on diaphragmatic breathing on my websiteso if you're interested, I have all this in

my singing course called quot; How To Sing BetterThan Anyone Elsequot;. So, to get started, I'm going to do the meanaverage of the male voice, which is the baritone, or high baritone register, so we're goingto start with an AH vowel, and we're going to do something very simple. We're just goingto go quot;Lah, ah, ah, ahhh, ah, ah, ahhhhh.quot; And what we want, is we want to match that tone,so try to match the tone with me. quot;Lahhhhhhhhhhhhquot;. Andif you can, Open Up the Back of your Throat as wide as possible, that's comfortable, andtry to hear that nice, bright Ping. AHH, it's not uuuu, o uhhhh. righté It's AHHH!Lah, ah, ah, AHHH, ah, ah, ahhhhh. we're

going to move up the scale. Lah, ah, ah,ahh, ah, ah, ahhh. and we'll move it up a little higher. Try to match the tone.Lah, ah, ah, ahh, ah, ah, ahhhh. Remember to take your breath. The breath is very important. It's the engine that drives your car for singing, so take your breath, Lah, ah, ah, ahhh, ah,ah, ahhh. Now this brightness and this tone is actually the only true sound that reallygrows the voice. So it keeps us from strictures in the back of the throat, so it's not uh,uh, uh, uh, uh. (froggy voice sound) . and getting, choking on our vowel sounds, gettingcaught on the cord in the vowel, so let's continue.Lah, ah, ah, ahhh, ah, ah, ahhh.

Now what you want to do is try to match thistriad or this threenote chord that I'm singing in order to be able to get into that pitchand really use your stomach to do it, so I want you to take a breath between each oneof these phrases that we're singing. Then I want you to totally relax, and then I wantyou to keep that throat open every time you go to sing one of these scales, so it actuallycan start to develop this good, open throat technique, for on your journey to begin, forlearning how to sing. So, Ladies, the same is true for you.Now girls, you usually blow a lot more air than guys, so your challenge is to, insteadof going. and I'll start where a mean average
