Singing Lessons for Beginners. So you want to learn how to sing, or you want to start to learn how to sing. Well, I want to help you on your journey to understand some of the most basic, fundamental, andrudimentary things that takes a basic, or nonsinger into a decent singer, or even a great singer.And these are nonnegotiables, these are things that we all have to do, no matter what levelof singing we are, these are things that really help us on our journey for singing.So the very, very first thing is: Pitch. Now I want to talk about breath support and vowelplacement, and we'll get into some of that, but pitch. can you carry any kind of a tuneéYou know, can you sing quot;Happy Birthdayquot; or
can you sing a simple nursery rhymeé That'skey, and then, basically holding that pitch will help us determine how well you're goingto be able to translate this and grow quickly on your journey for singing. So I'm goingto take us through some simple scales and I'm going to do a male version and a femaleversion, so hang in there, I'll do the girls second, but the basic things are this: Thefirst thing is posture. We want to sit up straight. We don't want to get our spine tippedin any direction. We don't want to look up at the ceiling when we're going for high notes,or look down. We want to have a good command of our breath. Alright, so I'm going to havesome scales and I'm going to have you match
the tone of the scale with a very, very simplearpeggio, which is just a threenote chord, and I'm going to go through these notes verysimply and show you how you can start your journey for singing. So we want to open upour mouth, quot;AH, AHquot; we're going to do the AH vowel, and there's several vowels thatyou have to work to build muscle memory so that this becomes second nature, but for starters,we're just going to build some simple muscle memory. We're going to take a breath from our belly,from our abdomen, not from our chest like this. We want to take a breath from our belly,as best as we can, and then I have a whole section on diaphragmatic breathing on my websiteso if you're interested, I have all this in
my singing course called quot;How To Sing BetterThan Anyone Elsequot;. So, to get started, I'm going to do the meanaverage of the male voice, which is the baritone, or high baritone register, so we're goingto start with an AH vowel, and we're going to do something very simple. We're just goingto go quot;Lah, ah, ah, ahhh, ah, ah, ahhhhh.quot; And what we want, is we want to match that tone,so try to match the tone with me. quot;Lahhhhhhhhhhhhquot;. Andif you can, Open Up the Back of your Throat as wide as possible, that's comfortable, andtry to hear that nice, bright Ping. AHH, it's not uuuu, o uhhhh. righté It's AHHH!Lah, ah, ah, AHHH, ah, ah, ahhhhh. we're
going to move up the scale. Lah, ah, ah,ahh, ah, ah, ahhh. and we'll move it up a little higher. Try to match the tone.Lah, ah, ah, ahh, ah, ah, ahhhh. Remember to take your breath. The breath is very important.It's the engine that drives your car for singing, so take your breath, Lah, ah, ah, ahhh, ah,ah, ahhh. Now this brightness and this tone is actually the only true sound that reallygrows the voice. So it keeps us from strictures in the back of the throat, so it's not uh,uh, uh, uh, uh. (froggy voice sound) . and getting, choking on our vowel sounds, gettingcaught on the cord in the vowel, so let's continue.Lah, ah, ah, ahhh, ah, ah, ahhh.
Now what you want to do is try to match thistriad or this threenote chord that I'm singing in order to be able to get into that pitchand really use your stomach to do it, so I want you to take a breath between each oneof these phrases that we're singing. Then I want you to totally relax, and then I wantyou to keep that throat open every time you go to sing one of these scales, so it actuallycan start to develop this good, open throat technique, for on your journey to begin, forlearning how to sing. With that said, how do we not crack when wesingé Well, why do we crack when we singé I think that's the biggest, most importantquestion. And, to answer that, there's many reasons, but there's two big reasons, andthe first one is physiological. There is a physical strength training of building upto a certain point so that we're strong enough to be able to hold a note. There'sa second part too, which is psychological, which has to do with nerves, and being afraidto sing in front of someone, or being afraid of the high note.Now, I have a singing course called How To Sing Better Than Anyone Else, at Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy , where I walk you through,
stepbystep, all of these different things,on how to strength train, how to think about the notes psychologically so you're notafraid of the high notes or you're not afraid of an audience. I want you to do them with me, but youhave to know how to control your diaphragm first, to be able to relax the chest, and theneck, and the throat, so that you are not choking off the cord, and panicking by thetime you get there, whether you're holding
a note, or worried about singing a high note, or just a phrase that's a little hard to sing. We're going to do three vowels: ooh, oh, and ah. And it's going to go like this.Now, guys, I'm going to do this in a lower register, for the mean average of where mostguys are. Ladies, you'll do this up an octave. La ah ah ooh, oh, ah, ah, ah, ahâ€¦You want to feel the freedom in the throat and the strength in the abdomen, because youknow how to control abdominal strength. Now, in the back of the throat I have another componenttutorial that goes along with this, called Open Throat Technique, where you want to have theback of your throat stay completely open,

Now, there's something calledvowel modifications. And in those vowel modifications, we want the throat to feel the path of leastresistance.
