Ken Tamplin from Ken Tamplin VocalAcademy, and I'm going to teach you a little bit about the voice and voice lessons today. This is Part One in a ThreePart series onHow to Sing Better for Guys. Now, there's a lot of different styles anda lot of different approaches to singing,
so that one subject isn't just how to singbetter for all guys, because it's how to sing better in whatever style you're looking tosing. Well, there are some very basic, nonnegotiables to singing, and I want to point out that mostof the time, not all of the time, but most of the time, guys want to sing harder thangirls. They want to get out there and just belt and wail. .and there's the other side, of R'n'B or Pop guys that are just looking to have somesoul, and some good licks, and some good tone, and good resonance, and stamina, andso forth, AND range, which we all want.
But I want to cover both aspects fairly briefly.I'm going to discuss Rock Singing first, and then I'm going to break into more Pop andR'n'B. So the very first thing is, is that we wantto have awesome posture. You want to sit up straight, or stand up straight, and by theway, when you sit, you lose up to 30% of your strength in your abdomen when you're singing,so I recommend you stand, if you can, but anyway, so you're going to want to stand,and you're going to want to take a breath from your belly, from your abdomen. Insteadof breathing like we do like this, from our chest, we want to breathe from our abdomen,from our belly, and our diaphragm. So you've
heard a lot about diaphragmatic support, soI'm not going to cover that here, I have some tutorials on my website regarding diaphragmaticsupport, and I have an amazing course called quot;How to Sing Better Than Anyone Elsequot;.So anyway, I want to talk about how to sing better for guys, so we're going to start firstwith this bright quot;PINGquot; in an quot;AHquot;vowel. quot;AH. AH.quot; I coined a phrase, it's called quot;IT'sthe LAH!!! AHHH!!quot; and it's that nice, Open Throat, Bright Ping Sound that keeps us fromsort of choking on our vowel sounds or pinching and squeezing as we go up.Now there's a lot to this but I'm going to just go through the basic elements of thisfirst, and then if you're interested, check out
my course, or check out my channel and I covera good amount of this stuff. So, we're going to start with the mean averageof singers, and that would be a baritone. And so we're going to start down in like amidbari or upper midbari range, and we're just going to go through a simple triad scalelike this: Lah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.And try to keep the jaw as stable as possible. Try not to move the mandible, or the jaw,keep it in the marble or static or stable position, we're going to continue up a triadscale, like this: Lah, ah, ah, AH, ah, ah, ahhh.Don't forget your breath. Take your breath,
and use your breath, bring in the breath,kind of like you're doing a situp, the feeling of how much strength is required when you'redoing a situp. So let's continue. , Lah, ah, ah, AH, ah, ah, ahhh.Take your breath. Relax the shoulders, relax the arms, relax the neck. let's continue:Nice, bright, Open AH. How to Sing Hi. My name is Aaron from Superior SingingMethod and in this tutorial, I want to talk about how to sing. OK. How to sing, kind of a broad topic butI'm going to narrow it down. At the end of this, I want to give you a really good exercise,one of my favorite exercises that will get you a little farther down the road of actuallyhow to sing. But let's talk for a minute about how to sing. What does that even mean to learnhow to sing and sing betteré I break it down into sometimes three, sometimes four differentcategories but I will give you four right
now. Learning how to sing is learning the instructionpart. So right now, this is part of the instruction. I'm going to give you that vocal exercisebut just to give you a little bit of instruction about the voice and how it works and how singingworks because the more you know about the voice and how the voice works when it comesto singing, the more you can apply these techniques and concepts to singing and to the exercisethemselves to start shaping your voice the way you want it to be so you have the besttone, the most resonant, full kind of sound. You can hit the high notes, all that kindof stuff.
So instruction is the first part. The secondpart is then I guess kind of obvious is the exercises. You got to have the exercises becausethe exercises are just like the rest of your body. You need to work out, exercise to keepin shape and to be able to make your body do the things that you want it to be ableto do to have the flexibility and the strength to do what you want to do. Third one is systematic. Learning singingsystematically is really the way to go. The link below is I have an eightweek systematicprogram that you can check out at some point but I believe that systematic is the way togo because you learn the right thing at the
right time and you're not only systematicallydoing the exercises but you're also learning the things in the right order and doing thingsin the right amount of time and repeating there's a lot of repetition which leads meto the next one and that's just being consistent. Use the repetition to consistently build andbuild and build your voice. So those are kind of the four main thingsand just along the lines of that last one, the repetition is I know that's kind of thedifficult part, righté I think we live in a culture that we don't want to do thingsover and over and we don't want to like work really hard to get to things and I get thatand with these tutorials, my point and my goal
is get you singing as good as you could possiblysing as fast as possible for sure but it does take repetition and it takes time. As youdo the exercises, this one that I'm about to give you and other exercises of courseyou need a variety of exercises but this is a really good one. It's not just going to take once and you'regoing to sing better. You know that. Intuitively, you know you're not just going to get betterby, Oh, do this exercise for 10 minutes and I can sing better. But if you do it this consistentlyfor two or three days, a week, two weeks, those kinds of things, you will start it'snot like all of a sudden you will be like
the greatest thing in the world but you willnotice a marked improvement in your voice. You will see improvement and that will encourageyou to be more consistent and get more instructions. Do more exercises. Do the systematic thingand the consistency and repetition. So what I want to talk to you about today,the instructional part, and this is all instruction but the instruction part of the actual voiceand how it works. What I want to talk about is the larynx. This is one of the problemsthat most singers have is that when they go to sing high notes, what they're doing isthey're raising their larynx up. Maybe you do this as well. When I'm not paying attentionand I'm singing, sometimes I still even do

How to Improve Your Singing Voice Hi. Aaron here from HowtoSing and we'regoing to be talking about how to improve your singing voice. Now, I know that's kind ofa broad topic. So I just want to narrow it down for this particular tutorial to eliminatingnasality, that really kind of annoying sound that is often in the voice and just talk aboutkind of how to get rid of that and a little bit about that process and even give you anexercise at the end as well. So let's get right to it. That nasal kindof ahh, that tone, what it does is it squashes the resonance, that kind of full, big, resonanttone that you want. It kind of squashes that
down. It has an annoying quality that youdon't really like in the first place and don't really want but it also kills the resonanceso you don't have that full kind of powerful sound as well. So how do we get rid of ité Where does itcome from, all thaté The nasal tone primarily comes from the soft palate. Now the soft palate,if you take your tongue and you're feeling the roof of your mouth, that's the hard paletteright there. If you follow it back, back to there where it gets kind of like softer there,that's your soft palate. So the soft palate is the ngaaa the nasal tone. What happensis that that soft palate is lowering. It's
lowering excessively and so actually try thiswith me. See if you can find it first of all and I want you to find it. Give it like alittle yell, like a haww. Notice what the soft palette does when you do a yawn. It raisesway up and actually your throat kind of opens up too and your larynx lowers. The yawn is a great way to kind of see whereyou need to be and what it needs to feel like kind of when you're singing. Now, it's anexaggerated form. You don't want to sing like vocalizes. I mean some opera singers dobut you don't want to necessarily sing like that but you want that kind of motion withthe soft palate that's up a little. You want
your throat nice and wide and then your larynxshould be pretty steady. Your larynx tends to raise up for the higher notes but you wantto keep that relatively steady. So during that motion, you kind of feel the soft palateand what it does, how it raises up. So let me talk a little more about now whenit's down, what it does is like the NG sound, that consonant when you do a song if you'resinging the word song or any NG sound. What it does is it cuts off go ahead and do anNG and then try to blow it out of your mouth. You can't because it blocks the air from comingout your mouth. So all the air comes out of your nose and so you're getting this kindof nasal tone.
So when you're doing NG or even like a Tsound, that's different than the soft palate but anytime your tongue, the back of yourtongue or the front of your tongue raises up to do a consonant sound, you want to getright back down where it's supposed to be behind the teeth right there. That's whereyou're seeing that. So anyway, I'm kind of going all over theplace but this is mainly talking about the nasality. So the NG consonant is somethingthat you need to do and the nose has that nasal sound. It has a function. I mean youdo want air coming out of your nose when you're singing but primarily you want it coming outof your mouth.
Your sinus cavity, your nasal cavity, it isa resonator but it's more of a kind of a secondary resonator and it's a resonator when you'rein your head voice. I won't get into head voice and chest voice but primarily you wantthe air coming out of your mouth and so when it's mostly coming out of your nose, that'swhen the nasal sound comes. Try this with me. This is an exercise to kindof get you to feel what it feels like to raise and lower your soft palate. Plug your noseand you're going to get that kind of a nasal sound, righté Now see what you have to do.Just say like an E or something. So you're going, Eeehhh. Try to get the nasal out ofyour voice. Watch what you have to do, Eeehhh.
