Ep28 How to Sing Falsetto vs Head Voice

A common question my students often ask whenthey're singing, is quot;Is that head voice or is that falsettoéquot; Inside this tutorial, I'llshow you the difference between falsetto and head voice so you'll know how to sing withboth to choose the best for your songs. Hi, I'm Chuck Gilmore with Power to Sing. Thedefinitions of falsetto and head voice often disagree. I define them based on the conditionof the vocal cords. Are the vocal cords connected or disconnectedé When your vocalcords are disconnected, you are in falsetto. Here's a slowmotion tutorial found on of the vocal cords disconnecting. This is a scope of voice artist Mal Webb from theUK. In this tutorial he's making some unusual

sounds. eeeeeeeeeeee You can see and hearthe vocal cords suddenly breaking apart. This is falsetto. While in falsetto, you cansee the edges of the vocal cords are barely touching as they open and close. With falsettoa lot of air passes through the cords. ahhhhh Because they're in falsetto, there's littleto no resistance to the air pressure from the lungs. You can sing high very easily infalsetto. ahhhhhhhh You can also bring the falsetto voice down quite low like this. ahhhhhhhSome singers can bring falsetto all the way down to where you would normally sing in chestvoice. Falsetto will not blend into the chest voice. In order to get back into the chestvoice, the vocal cords have to reconnect.

This usually involves a 'break' type feelingback into a connection. ahhhhhh For men singing in falsetto there's a significantloss of the lower overtones of the chest voice. I compare it to my Minney Mouse voice. HelloHello. My name is Minney Mouse. For women, there is a loss of the lower chest overtonesin falsetto voice as well. This can result in a breathy, airy tone quality. Also, ifI try to lean into my falsetto by increasing the volume and air there is little to no resistance. In fact, it seems to blow the cords further apart. ahhhhhhh Finally, there is some opinionthat years of singing primarily in falsetto is a leading cause of the 'vocal wobble' asyou get older. Because the vocal cords have

lost their ability to adduct firmly. How canyou tell if you are in falsetto and not head voice when you're singing on high pitcheséIf you can descend the scale and sing into your chest voice without reconnecting, thenyou are in head voice. ahhhhhhh If you can sing down the scale into chest voice and youhave to reconnect, you are in falsetto, because falsetto will not blend into the chest voice.ahhhhhh Some singers can disconnect into falsetto on high pitches. If you can disconnector flip, then you were in head voice. That is, your cords were connected. I can't dothat after a certain pitch, so that doesn't work as a test for me on higher notes. Itmight work for you. How to sing in head voice.

When your vocal cords are connected you areeither in chest voice or head voice. Your lower pitches are your chest voice and thehigher pitches are your head voice. Confusion between falsetto and head voice often occurswhen we are singing the higher pitches. This is because on the higher pitches the resonancefor both falsetto and head voice vibrates in our heads. ahhhhh Falsetto ahhhhh Headvoice Both resonating in the same place, the head. The difference is with head voice theresonance is made with connected vocal cords. In contrast, the resonance created by falsettois made with disconnected vocal cords. Both resonate in the head cavities. But the vocalcords are different. Whether connected or

disconnected vocal cords, on higher pitches, they both resonate in the same place. In head voice the vocal cords vibrate in a deeperfashion. That means they're opening and closing more firmly from bottom to top. This is trueeven more in chest voice. In head voice you can control the amount of air that is beingresisted by the vocal cords. You can be resisting very little air. ahhhhhhh I'll add a littlemore resistance to that. ahhhhh If I were in falsetto, it's a little harder. ahhhhhhhIt kind of blows the cords apart. ahhhhhh With my head voice I can get a little morepurchase with my vocal cords. Because your vocal cords are connected you can easilyadd more resistance to air by closing your

Learn How To Sing With The Head Voice vs The Falsetto LESSON 14 Craig Shimizu Voice

This is Craig from Shimizu Voice again. Thisis a little different look because I just thought about this lesson and wanted to putit down. Couldn't wait for my natural lighting. It's the afternoon time now. It's toolate for natural lighting because I would be blasted out. In fact, let's see whatthat looks like. This is what happens would you should thetutorial in the afternoon. Hi, this is Craig from Shimizu Voice. Andtoday I'd like to talk about the head voice versus the falsetto. A lot of controversy.they have difficultydescribing it. There's a definition that,

that you go by, by, in terms of the actualmovement of the, the actual position of the vocal folds itself to produce the, uh, falsetto.I think the best definition so far is that the falsetto is using the outer edges of thevocal folds and the inner stronger parts of the muscle of the vocal folds doesn't move, are relatively inactive. And you're just using the outer portion of the vocal folds. The falsetto is what most people describeas that fluty type of weak sounding breathy high voice. I was going to say head voicebut then that's what the controversy is. So, falsetto would have this kind of sound.Haa… Haa…

So, one of questions I have is that when,if I try to power up that sound, then, um, I get something like… ahh… When I'm trying to demonstrate how sopranossing… ahh So I make that sound. To me that was alwaysa strong falsetto. Cause the head voice is more like a… ahhh…. ahhh… ah… So when that gets strong, it's like… ahhh.ahhh.ahh The falsetto, strong is …. ahhh. Ahhh. Falsetto, strong is …. ahhh. Head voice, strong is …. ahhh. Chest voice.ahh.ahh.

The thing that gets me is when people aredemonstrating the falsetto, they say it's a light kind of sound. Haaa….haaaa.thathas no power. Yet even when they are demonstrating it, I can hear the head voice creeping in….haaa….haaaa….as they're trying to demonstrate the falsetto. So that's kind of my point that, that thehead voice or the falsetto is a breathy head voice. So I don't understand why it hasto be called a different sound. It, it, I know, uh, it was named a falsetto becauseit means false voice in. it's Italiané It's a false, false voice. That's why,the term falsetto. But when people are demonstrating it, it soundslike a breathy head voice. Or, is there such

a thing thené Is there a breathy head voiceéAnd if not, then, why isn't there a breathy, why isn't there a breathy head voiceé There'sa breathy chest voice. Hmm, that should be called.falsechestoé Probably the vocal foldposition is different than the, than a, uh, full tone chest voice. Ahh. Ahh. Ahh. Ahh.Sounds pretty different to me, but uh, why isn't it called falsechestoé For the same, for the same reason, in that it has more air coming out. Actually, in terms of voice training, to me,it doesn't matter. There is a purpose of how it can help you. Just noticed my computerwas. doing some research on this.on some

subjects that I could talk about. Uh. Anyway, it, uh. is it important to know whatvoice that you're usingé Uh, no, it's not. What's important is to know that, thedegree of breath that you have in your voice at any given time.Because.why is it.why is that so importanté Other than it sounds differenté It's important because.the more.becausethe higher the volume of air.that's the scientific term for amount of air that'scoming out. Always, there's some confusion a lot of times between velocity of air, whichwe love. Velocity is the speed of the air
